Here’s how a tourist visit to Gorgona takes place:
- The Island of Gorgona is an active prison, and therefore access to the island for tourismpurposes is only allowed with a guided tour reservation. It is not possible to visit or roam the island individually without the authorization of the prison and the accompaniment of an authorized Environmental Hiking Guide. Click here for more information on the Guided Tour.
- The availability calendar and the list of authorized groups/guides for visits on various dates are continuously updated. For information and reservations, WRITE TO us at info@toscanaminicrociere.it or call 347 7922453 at least 1 week in advance to participate. Below is a description of the guided tours.
How the day unfolds.
- Boarding from 7:45/8:15 in the fenced area located in front of the Coast Guard.
- 8:15/8:45: We set sail!!!
- Around 9:30/10:15, we arrive at Gorgona: the guides handle the formalities with the Prison and then escort us to the shop and the Officers' Canteen, where the facilities are located. After a short logistical stop, the guides divide us into two or three smaller groups that will proceed along the same route at a safe distance. We will visit the northern and western parts of the island along an easy walking route on white roads (distance 6 – 10 km).
- At lunchtime, we will stop in the shade of the oak grove to enjoy a packed lunch, which should be provided individually.
- After lunch, we will continue along the path to the Old Tower and conclude our journey at the charming little harbor.
- At 15:00/17:00/18:15, after completing the formalities, we will reboard the motorboat heading back to Livorno, where we will arrive around 16:30 / 18:15 / 19:30.
Technical details of the walking itinerary: Easy hike, partially shaded; length approximately 6 to 10 km; average elevation gain of 250 m; average walking time 3h30’; since the island is entirely within a prison, it is NOT possible to move individually on the territory or stray from the group during the visit; it is NOT allowed to disembark photographic equipment, video cameras, or mobile phones, which will be collected before disembarking. Swimming will be allowed at the discretion of the Prison Administration.
Recommended equipment: It is recommended to bring a small backpack with enough water; wear lightweight sports clothing and hiking or athletic shoes for walking. Visitors without appropriate footwear will NOT be allowed to participate in the visit. Clothing must be suitable for entry into a penitentiary.
Recommended equipmentTo disembark at Gorgona, it is necessary to send your first name, last name (including maiden name for women), place and date of birth, and mobile phone number, which will be forwarded to the Penitentiary Administration for SDI checks. Upon disembarkation, it is mandatory to present a valid ID. The personal data of passengers are subjected to checks by the Penitentiary Police in order to identify individuals with pending charges who will NOT be authorized to disembark. The criminal record may not be relevant for the "SDI" checks, which refer to the "INVESTIGATION SYSTEM" database, accessible exclusively by law enforcement bodies, but not by the courts or legal professionals. It is not possible to update this database even in the case of a complete resolution of the legal process. To request removal from this database, a request must be made by registered mail (R/R) to the Chief of Police in your place of residence.
